OUR MISSION: PRESERVING THE SOUL OF SLOVAKIA

In 2019, a group of Slovak emigrants in Vancouver realized they could find plenty of sites about Slovakia’s tourist attractions, but nothing online that truly captured their homeland’s soul.

So we built Slovenský Národný Portál. It’s not a travel brochure or government site. It’s a digital village where Slovak culture lives, breathes, and grows, run by people who carry the mountains in their hearts and the taste of their babka’s halušky on their tongues.

Every recipe we archive comes from real kitchens. Every photograph captures real moments. Every story saves a piece of Slovakia that might otherwise vanish.

MILAN HORVÁTH

HLAVNÝ KURÁTOR (HEAD CURATOR)

Born in a village under Kriváň peak, Milan spent three decades mapping forgotten folk songs across Slovak valleys. His grandmother taught him that culture dies when the last person stops telling the old stories.

Retired teacher who knows more legends than any book. At 73, Dedo learned video calls just to share stories with Slovak kids worldwide who’ve never seen the Tatras.

OUR DIGITAL VILLAGE HISTORY

2019: THE BEGINNING

Started with Milan’s laptop and 50 family recipes. First virtual Slovak Sunday dinner from Elena’s apartment in Kitsilano. 12 people from 3 countries.

2021: COMMUNITY GROWTH

Launched virtual čipka workshops. Added Dedo’s storytelling corner. Connected 500+ Slovak families across North America. Featured on CBC Radio’s cultural preservation segment.

2024: GLOBAL REACH

Now serving 15,000+ monthly visitors. Digital archive has 2,500 recipes, 800 folk songs, 1,200 historical photos. Partnership with Slovak Embassy in Ottawa.

AUTHENTICITY OVER POPULARITY

We choose real recipes from village kitchens over Instagram-friendly adaptations. We feature actual Slovak dialects, even when they're harder to understand. Truth over trends, always.

COMMUNITY OVER COMMERCE

This portal runs on donations and volunteer passion, not advertising revenue. We measure success by the number of Slovak children who learn their heritage, not website traffic.
